About Our Namesake, Captain Edward L. Grant
Edward L Grant was born and raised in Franklin, Massachusetts. He was one of the first men to enlist when the United States entered World War I in April 1917, and he served as a Captain in the 77th Infantry Division. During the fierce battle of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, all of Grant's superior officers were killed or wounded, and he took command of his troops on a four-day search for the "Lost Battalion." During the search, an exploding shell killed Grant on October 5, 1918. He was the first, and one of three, Major League Baseball players killed in action in World War I. He is buried at the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery in Lorraine, France.
About Post 75
Although we are a relatively small organization in town, we have a very active membership doing many positive things for Veterans and our community. Members of our Post regularly visit Veterans in Nursing homes, rehabilitation centers and senior living facilities. We also regularly visit the nearby VA Hospital where we help with social activities and visit veterans in their rooms as needed.
We provide an honor guard at local funeral homes when requested by families and lead the annual Franklin Memorial Day parade with our Color Guard and Rifle Squad. We provide our color guard/rifle squad for local events when requested.
Post 75 offers annual Scholarships to graduating students at Franklin High School and Tri-County Vocational & Technical High School.
