Minutes of Meeting on May 7, 2018. Meetings held at 23 Hutchison Street, Franklin, MA.

Ø  Minutes from April 2, 2018 meeting accepted. 



1.     Post 75 – If you need a ride to one of our monthly meetings, PLEASE contact the Post Commander John Milot 508-520-8771.




1.     The Road Race will be held on June 23rd at 8:00 AM.  The location is Remington Middle School in Franklin.  The flyer and sponsorship letter will be emailed to everyone again.  Sponsorships are still needed.


2.     Bob Markunis continues to book visits at Magnolia Heights, Atria and the Franklin Rehabilitation Center on Chestnut Street.  Magnolia Heights visits are every 3rd Wednesday at 2:00 and Franklin Rehab visits are every third Saturday of the month at 2:00.  Bob is looking for volunteers for Flag Day ceremonies.  One at 10:00 at Atria and one at 11:00 at Magnolia Heights.



1.     Finance Officers Report is same as previous month.  No changes to report.


2.     John Hefele is on the committee for the Veterans Walkway on the town common.  Bricks will be for sale until they are sold out. Over 400 bricks sold so far.  The committee was hoping to sell at least 400 bricks. The bricks will display the honorees name and branch of service.  The honoree can be someone living or deceased.  The names will be laser engraved with the information.  The price is $100 per brick.  Applications can be found online on the post website or the VFW website.  Local businesses are assisting with the cost of the project by donating funds.  The committee is hoping to dedicate the Walkway on Veterans Day.


3.     Raffle – Need donations for the raffle.  A TV and Bose radio have already been donated.  Also some Red Sox memorabilia will be donated to the raffle by the Boston Red Sox.  The town permit for the raffle has been completed.  The raffle will be held in October.


4.     Boys and Girls State- It will be held at Stonehill College in June.  The post is sponsoring 2 students at $350 each.


5.     The State Convention will be held in Plymouth on June 7th, June 8th and June 9th.


6.     Scholarship recipients were selected.  Scholarships will be awarded to 2 Franklin High School seniors.  There were no applicants from Tri-County.  John Milot, Kent Belcher, Ron Arpinto and Bob Markunis will present the scholarships at the Franklin H.S. Awards night on May 24th.


7.     Memorial Day activities were discussed.  The parade is on May 28th.  It starts at Dean Bank.  Rifle squad will be needed for the Norfolk Memorial Day events.  The color guard volunteers so far:  Steve, Dick Hynes, Ron and Dave Labonte.  The rifle squad so far is John M. Kent and Matt M.  There are enough volunteers for poppy sales.  The rifle squad practices will be May 12th and May 19th at 9:00 AM at King Street Memorial Park.


8.     The Veterans Service Officer is looking for volunteers for some school events.  On May 11 and May 17 the Parmenter School is looking for volunteers to assist with their Kindergarten and First Grade Math Mornings.  Also on May 25th they are looking for speakers for their assembly.   Volunteers will need to complete a CORI form.


9.     Elections were held.  A new Sgt. At Arms was elected. Steve Szlinsky was elected unanimously.  All other officers remain the same.


10.  Save the Date – Wreaths Across America in Bourne will be held on Saturday, December 15th.  A group of volunteers from the post are needed to attend.


11.  Reminder to members that Post 75 has a display at the Franklin Historical Museum which is open most Saturday mornings.


12.  Members please remember that Bob Markunis takes prayer requests for the sick.


13.  If you know of any potential members, please direct them to the post website for membership information and an application.

6.     Assisting/Visiting Veterans in Local hospitals. Matt McGrath leads this committee.  Next event - Date TBD.


7.     The American Legion Boys State program. Committee members: John Milot and Doug Wahl.

8.     Franklin Funeral Homes committee John M, Matt McGrath, Jim McNeil, John Hefele, George Ferguson, Bob Markunis, Kent Belcher, Dave Labonte, Jim Gurganis and Doug Wahl.

9.    Uniform Etiquette Committee Jim McNeil, John Milot, Steve S. and Bob Markunis

10.  Building Committee – Ron Arpino, John Milot, Jim McNeil and John Hefele.
