Minutes of Meeting on March 5, 2018. Meetings held at 23 Hutchison Street, Franklin, MA.

OLD BUSINESS

 

1.     The Road Race Committee has begun meeting to discuss the 2018 road race which will be held on June 23rd at 8:00 AM.  The location has been confirmed and will be Remington Middle School in Franklin.  The flyer and sponsorship letter will be emailed to everyone when it is ready.

 

2.     Bob Markunis continues to book visits at Magnolia Heights, Atria and the Franklin Rehabilitation Center on Chestnut Street.  Magnolia Heights visits are every 2nd Wednesday at 3:00 PM.  The next visit to Franklin Rehab. Will be March 17th at 2:00.  We will be assisting with Bingo.  Next visit at Magnolia Heights will be March 21st at 3:00.   

 

NEW BUSINESS

1.     No finance report.

 

2.     John Hefele is on the committee for the Veterans Walkway on the town common.  Bricks will be for sale until they are sold out. 270 bricks sold so far.  The committee is hoping to sell at least 400 bricks. The bricks will display the honorees name and branch of service.  The honoree can be someone living or deceased.  The names will be laser engraved with the information.  The price is $100 per brick.  Applications can be found online on the post website or the VFW website.  Local businesses are assisting with the cost of the project by donating funds.  It was suggested that the post purchase a brick in the name of Edward L. Grant.  This motion was seconded and approved.

 

3.     Raffle – Need donations for the raffle.  A TV and Bose radio have already been donated.  The timing will possibly be September. Ron will get the tickets printed in April.

 

4.     Boys and Girls State- We received applications for Boys and Girls State.  If you know of anyone who wants to attend and be sponsored let John M. know.  The Post will sponsor one boy and one girl.  Jim Gurganis will get applications to the local schools.  It will be held at Stonehill College in June.  Early bird registration is $325 (by April 6th)  otherwise registration is $350.

 

5.     The State Convention will be held in Plymouth on June 7th, June 8th and June 9th.

 

6.     A Post Family Day was discussed. Possibly at a local club like the Rod and Gun Club with events like fishing, horseshoes, games, food, etc.  Perhaps at the end of August on a Sunday?  August 19th or 26th were discussed as options.  Fishing and kayaking are allowed there.  We would need to bring our own grills.

 

7.     Scholarship applications have been delivered to Franklin High School.  Application deadline is April 30th.

 

8.     Post elections are coming up soon.  Nominations will be taken in April.  We will need a new Sgt. At Arms.

 

9.     Memorial Day activities were discussed.  We currently have 450 poppies. The VFW is selling them also on the same weekend.  We sold about 300 last year.  Volunteers will be needed for both poppy sales and the rifle squad.  Practices for the rifle squad will be held when the weather improves.  Please let John H. know if you can volunteer for poppy sales.  We need 3 teams of 2.

 

10.  Members please remember that Bob Markunis takes prayer requests for the sick.

 

11.  If you know of any potential members, please direct them to the post website for membership information and an application.

1.     Post Strategic Plan. Dave Labonte and Matt McGrath  

a.     Dave & Matt are meeting to discuss this effort. All invited to assist. Contact Dave or Matt for details.

 

2.     Raffle committee - John Milot, Ron Arpino, Matt McGrath

 

3.     Road Race Committee – Doug Wahl, Frank Coughlin, Jim Gurganis, Dave Labonte, Kim Leone

4.     Franklin High School Scholarship committee. – Kent, Ray, Steve

 

5.     Public Relations committee -John Hefele, Steve S. and Bob M.

6.     Assisting/Visiting Veterans in Local hospitals. Matt McGrath leads this committee.  Next event - Date TBD.

 

7.     The American Legion Boys State program. Committee members: John Milot and Doug Wahl.

8.     Franklin Funeral Homes committee John M, Matt McGrath, Jim McNeil, John Hefele, George Ferguson, Bob Markunis, Kent Belcher, Dave Labonte, Jim Gurganis and Doug Wahl.

9.    Uniform Etiquette Committee Jim McNeil, John Milot, Steve S. and Bob Markunis

10.  Building Committee – Ron Arpino, John Milot, Jim McNeil and John Hefele.
